Did you immigrate to the United States? Where did you emigrate from?

These words are commonly mixed up and misused. You may be wondering what they mean yourself or how to use them.

To immigrate means to live in a country other than your country of origin. Typically you would use the word immigrate along with the word “to” like in the example above.

To emigrate is to leave your country of origin to live somewhere else. You would typically use the term emigrate along with the word “from” as in, “I emigrated from Taured.”

You immigrated to the US and you emigrated from the country where you lived before coming here.
